Believe it or not, his main interests were boxing and football. At the small gym where he began training everyone was saying that "athletes must eat better than most of the people if they want to be outstanding". They believe that every good boxer and soccer player should start the day with three or four eggs for breakfast preferably eaten raw. Also rated high on their list of essential foods were fish and horse meat. The value of horse meat was based on the notion that eating it became as strong as enduring as the animal itself.

To chase your dream you need the right guidance. Year 1966 find him living in Germany where  Columbu observed that top bodybuilders from there started the day by taking vitamins and minerals, followed by 3 eggs and pineapple. He was very amazed because in Sardinia it was considered an exotic fruit, not a support for aiding the digestion of protein. Pineapple was sometimes included on the lunch menu, but the dominating food was a large piece of chicken or fish. Horse meat was also favored, because they believed that eating it makes you as strong as a horse; however, the bodybuilders in Germany also knew it was high in protein with less fat than any other red meat.
As the days went by he became fascinated with the idea that a particular selection of food make the difference between remaining an average body builder and becoming champion. The advantage of having a right diet would become evident after a longer range of time, although he quickly became equally sensitive to the benefits of eating specific foods and eliminating others.

In 1968, in Mr Universe Competition, in London he observed that the most outstanding bodybuilders were American. That is the moment when he was asking what made the big difference to the real depth and clarity of Americans, in addition to the symmetry of Europeans. And the secret was a specialized diet, enabling them to achieve a defined look, today the main concern of winning bodybuilders. He find out that the intake of protein was provided by eggs and fish. Carbohydrates came primarily from fruits and vegetables and they were avoiding as much as possible potato chips, fries and all crunchy snacks wrapped in plastic bags or cellophane.

Planning made him a champion. A specific course of action was essential to become Mr Universe, Mr Olympia or a champion in any field of activity. Exercise and nutrition should be divided equally so he used 50% of his efforts in developing the best training possible while the other half was used to find the most beneficial diet for muscular growth. He joined chiropractic college, where the courses on nutrition opened his eyes to the relationship between food intake and body chemistry. Each day Columbu discovered fascinating details of body makeup that will help him control over the muscular growth.
